Anatomically and biochemically

The myth "will over matter" states: with enough willpower, anyone can overcome any biological state – exhaustion, pain, hunger, fear. This myth has something seductive about it – it returns control. But it is neurobiologically incorrect. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) is the neurological basis of will: it plans, inhibits impulses and holds goals active. It is powerful – but it is a cortical system.

Cortisol is released via the HPA axis – a steroidal-hormonal system. Adenosine accumulates over the day and generates sleep pressure – a biochemical system. The amygdala marks threats – a subcortical system faster and older than the dlPFC. None of these systems is directly switched off by prefrontal wilful effort. The dlPFC can modulate behaviour – but it cannot think cortisol away.

Why does the myth persist? Because wilful effort genuinely works short-term. Noradrenaline generates an activation surge that temporarily bridges biological states. This feels like control. Long-term it produces more exhaustion – and paradoxically confirms the myth, because the brief success counts as proof.

Examples from everyday life

  • Preventing sleep by will: Adenosine accumulates independently of will. The dlPFC can delay sleep onset – but it cannot cancel sleep need.
  • Bridging pain through focus: Focus can modify pain perception (gate control theory) – but it does not erase the pain stimulus.
  • Willing fear away: The amygdala responds faster than the dlPFC. Wilful effort can delay the response – not prevent it.
  • Ignoring hunger: Ghrelin rises independently of will. Refusing food is possible – switching off ghrelin is not.
  • Exercise despite exhaustion: Brief high performance through noradrenaline is possible. Afterwards the system depletes faster.

What this card does not say

This card does not refute the effectiveness of willpower. It shows where its biological limits lie. This card is not a diagnostic tool and not a treatment guide.

These visualisations are scientific educational representations of normal brain functions in the healthy human brain. They are not diagnostic tools, not therapy, and not a substitute for medical or psychotherapeutic treatment.
